Creative Robotics and Electronic Arts
(Summer School 2010)
Tom Keene and Steve Carpenter
A creative, practical and theoretical electronic arts workshop, where you will build your own programmable robot from scratch and learn how to work with sensors to make interactive digital artworks. We will work with Arduino, which is an open-source electronics prototyping platform based on flexible, easy-to-use hardware and software. It's intended for artists, designers, hobbyists, and anyone interested in creating interactive objects or environments. We will also look at the theoretical ideas and issues around interactive media art and opportunities for career development. All materials provided; course fee includes a robot kit worth £70 and an Arduino starter kit worth £70 for you to keep.
Steve Carpenter designs and manufactures robot kits and offers a custom design and manufacturing service. He is skilled in product design and engineering. He also works as a robotics consultant in both education and art settings. His skills were usefully employed in building a centrepiece for Brighton’s White Night Festival in 2009 -- some robotic Gallé cats!
