PHOTOGRAPHY- FAMILY LEARNING   [Top]

For age 5 – 16 plus a parent or guardian
A course for parents and children to enjoy together covering the very basic photography techniques, how to use the camera and its basic controls, use of light, taking photos and basic photo-editing techniques. Projects include using the basic camera and how to work with light.

Children must be accompanied by a parent and should provide any necessary photographic equipment (Camera or mobile phone camera)

Denise Felkin is a freelance creative photographic artist. She also teaches photography at City College Brighton & Hove and Evolution. She specialises in fine art, festival & events, travel and some commercial photography.

ANALOGUE SOUND WORKSHOP

A one day practical session focussing on analogue electronic music techniques using hands on tools and equipment. Each student will make tape loops, draw sound onto 16mm film, build a junior Theremin kit and rewire a walkie-talkie.
All materials provided.

Ian Helliwell has produced and developed music, super-8 films, electronic instruments, film and music programmes and light-show projections for concerts and club nights. Self- taught, operating alone and without funding, he has worked with second-hand and homemade equipment and produced over 40 short films. Since the start of the 1990s he has been making and modifying 9v circuitry, constructing a series of Hellitron tone generators to make the soundtracks to his super-8 films. www.ianhelliwell.co.uk

CREATIVE DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

VIDEO ART WITH MOBILE PHONES

The digital revolution is forcing us to redefine artistic boundaries, and the popularization of digital recording devices, the development of web 2.0 and the success of on-line social networks are configuring a new language in which the moving image has a key role.

This workshop takes a practical approach to the development of video-art pieces made with mobile phone cameras and reflects on the genre in critical context. Participants should bring their own video mobile phone and its download cable or be able to do Bluetooth file transfer.

Alvaro Collar received his BA in Media Studies from Complutense University of Madrid. A successful video artist, he is the creator of pieces such as Centrifuge (2007) which won the First MovilFilmFest Best Original Idea prize or The Fifth Room (2005) which won the Movie Minute Cup and was selected to represent Spain at the UNICA World Minute Movie Cup 2006 in South Korea.

AN INTRODUCTION TO FILM AND VIDEO PRODUCTION FOR ARTISTS

This weekend course is aimed at artists looking to take their first steps into video production and documenting their work. Learn the basic skills needed to produce a short film from script to screen. Ideal for those with little or no experience, looking to create professional short films using basic equipment and little money. The weekend covers the basic principles of script writing, image composition, working with the camera, editing techniques and special FX.

All equipment needed is provided but students are encouraged to bring any equipment they would like to use, or about which they would like to ask questions. A DVD will be supplied of the finished film produced.

Martin Smith is a local film–maker and has been commissioned to work all over Brighton and the South East, France, and Spain. An experienced tutor, he has been working for the last four years with adults and young people to create short, low budget films.

VOCAL IMPROVISATION/SOUND WORKSHOP

Three sessions will be used to explore improvisation using the voice as an experimental sound tool. The group will work together to develop and explore vocal expression using raw voice and electronics. You will have the opportunity to play by putting your voice through loop pedals and fx units to find different ways to generate vocal sounds. You can attend all three sessions or just one to gain some experience of vocal looping and group improv. All materials provided.

Kassia Zermon AKA Bunty received her BA (hons) in Music and Visual art from The University of Brighton in 2005.She has since become a successful solo artist , performing improvised experimental vocal looping sets; creating music live using only one mic and fx pedals. Bunty is an experienced improviser having collaborated with Carnival collective, Vole, Lyrikool Lipz (midlands beatbox champion) to name a few. She curates multimedia events throughout the country as part of the Beatabet collective and most recently produced a vocal looping show conducting a choir, dancers, film, and audience participation in a church setting.

PERFORMANCE ART SCHOOL

Gain the knowledge and confidence to make performance art. Working alongside Victoria Melody she will guide you through the fundamentals whilst creating an entertaining but challenging environment. You will make up to six different performances or work on one that will be developed through out the course. Sessions feature The Live Art Developments-Performance Pack, documentation, site-specific, performance for camera, fitting a performance into a given theme, and performance in a public space. Basic materials are provided.

Victoria Melody makes site-specific and audience participatory performances and video works. She has been commissioned and shown internationally. She is based in Brighton and is supported by Arts Council South East and Basement Art Productions South East. She is currently partaking in two artist residencies and making a new performance which will have its debut at The Study Gallery of Modern Art.

COLOUR – MOODS, METHODS AND PRACTICES

A practical and theoretical course looking at the nature of colour and its impact on experience from the theory, science and psychology of colour to creative ways of working with colour in artistic practice. This course will include discussions, background theory and lots of hands on creative work with colour using a wide range media. Basic materials provided.

Theresa Sundt has been professionally involved with colour through teaching and art, mainly textiles and illustration. Her contagious enthusiasm for colour broadened with a Colour Therapy diploma and for the last ten years she has been lecturing internationally on Colour Awareness for the corporative world, schools and holistic practices. Her book ‘the Art of Colour Therapy’, with her unique approach on this subject including a CD with the Colour Album by Firebush was recently published.

TUTORED LIFE DRAWING

Learn and develop key drawing skills such as proportion, tone, structure, gesture and colour, using a wide range of approaches and materials. There is individual tuition for all levels and we also look at and discuss life drawing in an art historical context.

Juliet Kac is a professional portrait painter and works extensively from the model.  With an MFA in Fine Art from Auckland University and a PhD from The University of Brighton on the relationship between music and painting, she currently teaches oil painting, life drawing and portraiture.

A one-year course introducing a range of fine art media and techniques, with an ongoing focus on drawing.  Suitable for all levels, including beginners and is good preparation for a foundation course. Each term uses observational drawing as a starting point for project work in a range of media including: painting, sculpture, printmaking and mixed media.

Some materials are included and a materials list is provided at the first session. Fees shown are per term and students may join any term (£20 discount available for 1 year paid in advance). Join either Wednesday evening or Thursday morning session.

Dinah Kelly received her BA in fine art from Ruskin School of Drawing.  A studio member of Phoenix, her work is influenced by Islamic art and architecture.  She is an artist educator currently working with Victoria and Albert Museum, Courtauld Institute, Pallant House, and Orleans House Gallery.

LIME FRESCO PAINTING   course notes

Learn the local history, geology and techniques of fresco painting in a one-day practical workshop. Includes a demonstration and a guided hands on session, where you will learn to grind pigment, lay plaster and apply colour producing a completed fresco of your own. Please bring your own brushes-one pointed and one flat (Chinese are best); palette knives; tracing paper and designs; postcards or drawings (something geometric/decorative with a three tone palette is ideal). Designs can also be supplied.

Andrew Gathercole’s painting stems from his relationship to his environment and interest in local history. Trained at The University of Brighton he has extensively researched fresco and mural painting in the Sussex area.

METAL JEWELLERY

Learn a variety of jewellery making techniques including: cutting, soldering, polishing and texturing metal, to create individual copper and silver jewellery. For beginners and continuing students. Continuing students will be supported with individual projects to explore techniques such as stone setting, chain making or brooch making etc. Tools and basic materials provided; additional materials (i.e. Silver) will cost around £10 extra.

Emma Willcocks is a practicing jewellery designer and maker with over 15 years experience in the field. As a tutor her aim is to facilitate and inspire people from all backgrounds to discover their own potential using a practical and experimental approach to learning and creativity.

PUPPETRY FOR ARTISTS

A one day course to make a stick puppet based on your own drawing/painting. Then learn basic puppeteering techniques to make it come alive. Materials for making puppets and acrylic paints will be provided, if you have a preferred special medium please bring it along.

Isobel Smith studied design at Central St Martin's and Fine Art at University of Brighton. She ran Smile Maker design company, producing bespoke painted furniture, greetings cards and china tea sets. Isobel launched Gravy Boat Puppets in 2007, she is a puppet maker and puppeteer and performs regularly at Komedia and Jane Bom-Banes in Brighton. Currently she is converting a caravan into a touring puppet theatre.

A five week practical and informative taster course run by an illustrator with twenty years of experience. For artists who would like to find out more about the various fields of illustration. Through set projects the students receive practical feedback on their artwork. The course will cover how to get commissions, find an agent and focus your work for freelance illustration. PAINTED FURNITURE INSPIRED BY CHARLESTON HOUSE

A weekend course guided and supported by professional artists and tutors. You will design artwork to decorate your own piece of furniture inspired by the Bloomsbury artists of Charleston House. Participants should bring their own small–medium sized piece of wooden furniture for decoration plus acrylic paints and brushes, all other materials supplied.

This is a practical course for artists wishing to extend their knowledge of acrylic painting processes and further their creative possibilities. ART HISTORY IN PRACTICE
